Why You’re Good at Work but Stuck With Women

At work you solve problems, make decisions and handle pressure without falling apart.
Then you sit across from a woman you want to see again and start questioning every word that comes out of your mouth.
Your competence didn’t leave the building. You’re comparing an area you’ve practiced for years with one you may have avoided for years.
Apparently, your job was supposed to train you for first dates somewhere between the quarterly reports.
WORK GAVE YOU A PROCESS
You weren’t born knowing how to do your job. You learned the work, watched people who were better, made mistakes, took feedback and kept going.
After enough practice, the hard parts became ordinary. Now you call that confidence.
Dating usually gets treated differently. A guy feels awkward, assumes the awkwardness means he isn’t good at it and goes back to the parts of life where he already feels capable.
That protects his pride. It also keeps him single.
YOU’RE NOT MISSING SOME SECRET QUALITY
I know how wide this gap can feel. Years ago, a woman looked at me, smiled and waved me over. I did nothing. I laughed it off and found reasons why I shouldn’t talk to her.
I wasn’t incapable. I was afraid and unpracticed.
The same ability that helped you become good at work can help you here. Learn what matters. Practice starting conversations. Go on dates. Notice where you become uncertain and work on that part.
PRACTICE WITHOUT USING PEOPLE
Talk to more women and accept dates with women you’re genuinely interested in learning about.
Don’t date someone you already know you would never choose just to gain experience. She’s a person, not training equipment.
You can practice being present, asking good questions, making decisions and stating your interest clearly without pretending to want a future you don’t want.
USE THE RESULT
If a first date goes nowhere, don’t turn one woman’s decision into a judgment on your entire future.
Ask what you can learn. Did you hide your interest? Talk too much? Choose someone who didn’t want the same life? Or was she simply not the right woman?
Make one correction and continue.
THE COMPETENCE IS ALREADY IN YOU
You’re already the kind of guy who can learn difficult things. Stop treating this part of your life as the one exception.
Confidence comes after competence. Competence comes from practice.
